THE SANCTUARY

Designed as the state’s central command for safe, connected movement, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has revamped their Transport Management Centre (TMC) at Eveleigh to support NSW’s complex road, rail, bus, ferry, and metro networks. Uniting technology and teamwork, it features one of the largest screens in Australia - a 23 metre operations screen that makes real-time coordination and rapid incident response possible every day.

The brief centred around optimising visibility of this integral screen for key operational roles, while reshaping circulation for agile movement and efficient collaboration. The reconfigured floor plan enables access to key operational zones and amenities, and is enriched by natural materials and biophilic elements.

Inspired by the concept of a sanctuary, the Davenport Campbell team created a material palette that is earthy and natural, supporting the expansive, light-filled spaces. The layering of calm tones and the creation of quiet spaces achieves a balance between connection and focus, and helps to support TfNSW shift teams working around-the-clock.

Our Signage and Graphics team worked closely with Wiradjuri artist, Michelle Hamilton, through the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative, to translate her original artwork across wood panelling and glazing. Other signage and graphics elements across the TMC were developed in line with the latest TfNSW Signage Standards, with environmental graphics, braille and tactile markers providing clarity and accessibility. The artworks and branded wall graphics integrate into the fabric of the workplace, affirming a collective sense of purpose and inclusivity for staff and visitors.

This holistic transformation embodies Davenport Campbell’s design approach, beginning with deep-dive planning and user engagement, and resulting in a design that is grounded in context. The new Transport Management Centre is an agile, resilient hub, purpose-built for today’s needs and tomorrow’s complexities, and is a vital resource in enabling Transport for NSW to keep the state safe, responsive and connected.
