A HARBOUR HOME

Port Authority’s new workplace in Walsh Bay gives the organisation a contemporary home on Sydney’s harbour, shaped by a deep exploration of their relationship with NSW’s waterways. Drawing on the idea of a dynamic water’s edge, tidal movement, and ocean currents that are both free-flowing and highly navigable, the concept of ‘Fluid Duality’ became the foundation of our design narrative. This duality – calm yet powerful, layered yet clear – is translated throughout the workplace as a balanced environment that supports focused work, collaboration, and connection.

The material palette draws on the rhythms of the harbour – from rippled metal ceilings and fluted glazing that catch light like water does, to layered tones of timber, deep blues, and textured finishes. The balance of darker, more intimate moments with lighter, more open areas creates a sense of movement and contrast that mirrors the interface between land and sea.

Across the workplace, a calm, professionalism is elevated by carefully crafted joinery, soft acoustics, hospitality-inspired moments, and intuitive circulation. Although separated, work, support, and social areas are all interconnected to encourage people to gather, recharge, and focus. A mix of open work areas, collaboration zones, quieter focus settings, and integrated wellness and utility spaces, ensures that Port Authority’s new future-ready workplace functions as smoothly as the operations it supports.
