Artist Spotlight: Jinga Walla

We’re spotlighting “Jinga Walla”, a commissioned artwork by Aunty Debbie Sandy, Tiara Thompson and Christopher McGregor-Sandy, with glazing graphics by Theresa Bower, facilitated by Burrundi Design Studio for Toyota’s Crestmead Parts Centre on Yugara Country in Queensland.

Jinga Walla honours the strength of the Yugara Country mobs as Original Caretakers, with the Logan River running through the centre of the work representing sustenance, survival and trade. Symbols of long travel - humpys and kangaroos - honour Elders, community and ancestors, while a central gathering place and Elder gum tree reflect an enduring connection to Country and caretaking of local ecosystems. At its heart is Aunty Debbie Sandy’s handprint, a powerful matriarchal statement that “we were, we are, and will always be” here through connection, longevity and mobility.
