Sydney’s Transport Management centre

Partnering with Transport for NSW, we are thrilled to have designed and delivered Sydney’s Transport Management Centre (TMC) which has officially reopened this week after a major $10 million upgrade. The upgraded centre connects the state’s road, rail, bus, ferry and metro networks - all managed with expanded technology and space for new ways of working.

Watch the Nine News and 7NEWS coverage to see the revamped TMC in action, how much it’s changed since its original opening, and the role it plays in keeping Sydney’s transport moving every day.

When it first opened back in 1999, ahead of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the TMC managed around 70 incidents a day. Now, 26 years later, it handles more than 700, coordinating rapid response across the transport network, using traffic lights, a network of cameras, variable message signs, traffic response crews and tow trucks. Also since its opening, daily road travel in Greater Sydney has increased by around 30% and the size of the NSW road network has increased by around 18%.

Transport for NSW Executive Director of Operations Management, Craig Moran said:

“This upgrade has given our teams the space, technology and tools to collaborate better than ever, delivering smoother, safer trips for everyone who relies on us.”

The revamped, state-of-the-art TMC includes:

  • A 23-metre-long digital screen wall streaming live feeds from across the state - one of the largest of its kind in Australia. The screen displays CCTV feeds from across Sydney, network data and analytics, and more, critical during disruptions, or major weather events and bushfires.

  • Drone pilot stations with beyond-visual-line-of-sight capability - allowing crews to direct an immediate response to major incidents in any part of the state.

  • A 55% increase in workspaces in the main operations room - ensuring there is sufficient space for around the clock operations.

  • Upgraded communications tech for faster public and media updates.

  • Improved lighting, amenities and facilities - supporting crews with 24/7 shiftwork.

Congratulations to everyone involved with this project. In the coming weeks, we will be sharing more detail on the interior design and signage of the TMC, so stay tuned!
