Nepal Birthing centre nearing completion

ESG

After eight months of work, the Lamtada Birthing Centre in Far West Nepal is now nearing completion, with the final coat of paint recently applied. This milestone reflects a meaningful collaboration with the Australian Himalayan Foundation (AHF), where we have contributed technical support and governance guidance throughout the journey.

Delivered in partnership with Action for Nepal and Build Up Nepal, the project in Darugaun, Khaptadchhanna has steadily taken shape from its earliest foundations through to the final stages of construction. Along the way, local mason training has played an important role, not only ensuring quality but also creating skills and opportunities within the community itself.

The centre has been built using Compressed Stabilised Earth Bricks (CSEBs), made from local soil, sand, cement and stabiliser. These bricks are not only durable and cost-effective, but also far more environmentally responsible, reducing emissions by up to 75% compared to traditional fired bricks.

Most importantly, this centre represents something far greater than a building. For women in this remote region, it means no longer facing long, exhausting, and often risky journeys on foot to reach the nearest health service while in labour. It means being able to give birth closer to home, in a safe and supported environment, surrounded by care when it is needed most.
